Are the Cayman Islands Safe for Tourists?

When you’re visiting a new destination, it’s impossible to overstate the importance of feeling safe. From solo adventures to family breaks, feeling comfortable and confident in unfamiliar surroundings allows you to focus fully on making memories.

So, let’s get straight to the all-important question — are the Cayman Islands safe for tourists? Yes! The place we call home isn’t only a breathtaking destination, it’s also one of the safest to visit in the Caribbean.

Sunset House is a resort for divers, by divers. Our range of Grand Cayman diving trips allows you to explore some of our island’s best and most famous underwater sites, including a Kittiwake wreck dive! And with our Dive+Stay custom Grand Cayman dive packages, you can combine your diving and accommodation for the ultimate convenience.

As locals with a passion for showcasing the best our island has to offer, we have created this guide to explain how and why the Cayman Islands — especially Grand Cayman — are the perfect place for your next getaway. Please get in touch if you have any questions for our team.

Grand Cayman is a Peaceful Paradise

It’s important to acknowledge that we all have individual concepts of safety based on personal experiences. However, statistics help to paint an accurate picture. And the good news is that the Cayman Islands consistently boast low crime rates compared to many other Caribbean destinations. With a strong focus on law enforcement and a tight-knit community, incidents of serious crime are rare here.

Figures from 2022 showed the homicide rate per 100,000 people was as low as 7.99. This is considerably lower than Jamaica (57), the Bahamas (31), and Trinidad and Tobago (31).

What’s more, serious crime almost exclusively occurs between locals. Areas frequented by tourists, such as popular beaches and the best places to snorkel in the Cayman Islands, are so safe that the chances of a visitor becoming a victim of crime are incredibly low.

Are the Cayman Islands Safe for Hotel Guests?

Absolutely! Hotels, resorts, and condos in the Cayman Islands are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for their guests. From luxurious resorts to cozy beachfront villas, accommodations adhere to strict safety standards to ensure your comfort and peace of mind.

You’ll find that most hotels and condos offer 24-hour security, CCTV surveillance, and well-trained staff dedicated to maintaining a safe and welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re unwinding by the pool, watching a sunset from your balcony, enjoying the famous diving, or treating your tastebuds at My Bar and Seaharvest Restaurant in Grand Cayman, you can rest assured that your safety is in good hands.

Does Grand Cayman Have First-Class Medical Facilities?

Absolutely! Of course, we like to think that no accidents or ill health will occur on our vacations. But knowing that there are great medical facilities if you need them offers peace of mind. Here in Grand Cayman, we have modern, world-class hospitals, the largest of which is the Cayman Islands Hospital (known locally as the George Town Hospital) in George Town.

To complement the hospitals, we also have numerous medical clinics offering a range of urgent and non-urgent services. These facilities are mostly concentrated in the Seven Mile Beach and George Town areas.

And, as one of the world’s premier dive destinations, we are equipped with a decompression chamber, also known as a hyperbaric chamber. This two-person chamber, located in the Cayman Islands Hospital, is on hand for any divers in need of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Are There Any Places to Avoid in the Cayman Islands?

Fortunately, there are no areas in Grand Cayman and across the Cayman Islands that pose significant safety concerns for tourists. Whether you’re exploring the vibrant streets of George Town, soaking up the sun on Seven Mile Beach, or venturing off the beaten path to discover hidden gems, you can feel confident in your surroundings.

As with any destination, exercising common sense and taking standard precautions while exploring is always a good idea. Keep your belongings secure, avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas, and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

By staying vigilant and informed, you can enjoy everything the Cayman Islands have to offer with peace of mind. If you’re heading to the place we call home for the first time, be sure to read our First Timer’s Guide to Grand Cayman Island — it’s filled with valuable local tips and insights!

With a legal system based on British common law and a stable government, the Cayman Islands offer a secure and reliable environment for visitors and residents alike.
