For centuries, seamen have told tales of the ocean’s elusive mermaids. And here in Grand Cayman, those folktales are a reality with our iconic ‘Amphitrite’, a stunning 9-foot bronze mermaid statue.
Located off the shore of our resort, we commissioned the Mermaid to add another amazing sight to Grand Cayman’s remarkable underwater world.
And because the Mermaid attracts divers and snorkelers from our house reef, it also eases the strain on the beautiful coral and the surrounding environment.
Weighing 600 pounds, the Mermaid was placed and secured in November 2000.
Chosen to reflect its timeless vision of the ocean realm, Amphitrite rests in approximately 50 feet of water making her accessible to both divers and snorkelers.
The sculpture, cast out of superior-quality silicone bronze, was signed, numbered, and dated by prominent Canadian sculptor, Simon Morris.
Morris took great care when assembling Amphitrite’s cast pieces, using welding rods of the same alloy as the sculpture itself to avoid discoloration — although natural weathering will slowly change the patina of the entire work.
The Mermaid’s official name is Amphitrite (am-fi-tri-te), Siren of Sunset House, a reference to Poseidon’s wife.
When it comes to diving in Grand Cayman, saying “hello” to Sunset House’s mermaid is now an unmissable experience.
