Prioritize Diving in Grand Cayman

Did you know that the Cayman Islands has 365 dive sites? And as the largest of the three islands, Grand Cayman is home to over 200 of these! But it’s not just the sheer number of sites that makes our island a renowned global diving hotspot. What sets Grand Cayman apart is its unparalleled variety of locations, ease of access, and consistently excellent conditions. The latter includes our water’s famous visibility, which averages between 60 and 100 feet (18 to 30 meters).

From shallow reefs teeming with life to the stunning walls that plunge thousands of feet, there’s something here for every diver — from beginners to seasoned professionals.

Choosing to dive in Grand Cayman means you’re guaranteed a top-tier underwater experience. Our island’s dive sites are meticulously preserved, and the marine ecosystems thrive thanks to strict conservation efforts. Plus, with Sunset House as your base, you’ll be just steps away from some of the best wonders our waters have to offer.

Choose the Right Season for Diving in Grand Cayman

Diving in Grand Cayman is a year-round activity, but certain seasons may offer you more advantages than others. In short, there is no “right” or “best” season to visit — ultimately, you have to do what’s best for you.

Our blog What Time of Year is Best to Visit the Cayman Islands? takes a broad look at this topic, so we recommend checking it out when you have finished here. For now, though, some of the unique seasonal advantages include:

  • November to May: This is the island’s dry season and the most popular time for diving. The weather is pleasant, visibility underwater can exceed 100 feet, and the seas are calm. All this adds up to incredible conditions for divers of every ability level.
  • June to October: These summer months offer warmer waters and fewer crowds. While there’s a slight chance of tropical storms, this season also brings opportunities to see juvenile marine life. You may also find all-round costs cheaper than during peak season.

Regardless of when you visit, Grand Cayman’s underwater world is always a joy to explore!

Plan to Dive at Grand Cayman’s Iconic Sites

When diving in Grand Cayman, there are some must-visit sites that deserve a spot on every diver’s itinerary. These famous locations have renowned reputations for a good reason — because they offer exceptional diving experiences! You’ll only regret it if you miss out on these iconic Grand Cayman sites:

  • Kittiwake Wreck: Once a U.S. Navy submarine rescue vessel, the Kittiwake now rests off Seven Mile Beach and has become a vibrant artificial reef. Explore its five decks and the marine life that calls it home on our Kittiwake Grand Cayman Dive!
  • The Mermaid Statue (Amphitrite): Located on our own Sunset Reef, this 9-foot bronze mermaid is a famous underwater landmark. It’s a short swim from shore and a favorite among our guests. Dive the Mermaid in Grand Cayman with us for the complete experience!
  • The West Wall: Famous for its sheer drop-offs, the West Wall offers awe-inspiring dives with breathtaking marine life sightings. Our 2-Tank Morning Dive in Grand Cayman visits some of the West Wall’s very best sites followed by a beautiful shallow reef experience.

Understand Grand Cayman’s Dive Regions

With so many amazing dive sites spread around our island’s coastline, it’s important to understand where the locations you want to visit are. Unless you have plenty of vacation time, we highly recommend diving sites in one or two areas. This allows you to focus on enjoying the underwater wonders you encounter without any distractions. The last thing you want is to feel rushed as you zip around from one part of Grand Cayman to another.

Grand Cayman is divided into several distinct dive regions, each with its own unique appeal:

  • West Side: Home to some of our island’s most popular sites, including the Kittiwake and shallow reefs teeming with life. This is the leeward shore, so diving conditions are favorable year-round. The walls and reefs off the west coast, from George Town to North West Point, are Grand Cayman’s most frequently dived sites.
  • North Wall: Running parallel to the northern coastline, the North Wall takes a dramatic plunge from around 40ft below the surface only a hundred yards or so from the shore. The wall falls many thousands of feet, offering thrilling dives for experienced adventurers, as well as pelagic encounters.
  • East End: Less crowded and more rugged, the East End features Grand Cayman’s most remote and unspoiled diving. Significantly fewer divers make it this far, as it’s on the opposite side of our island to Seven Mile Beach and George Town. The East End is ideal for anyone looking to escape the crowds.
  • South Side: The dive sites scattered along the south coast are typically dived during the winter. This is because they remain calm during nor’westers, i.e. windy weather blowing from the northwest. Drop-offs here typically start at greater depths than in other areas, but there are some truly spectacular sights to be found.

With our prime location on our island’s west coast, Sunset House has easy access to numerous dive regions while also offering the convenience of shore dives right from our property. Read our Guide to Coral Reef Diving in Grand Cayman to find out more about the adventures waiting for you here.

Grand Cayman’s underwater beauty is a treasure that needs protecting. As divers, it’s our responsibility to minimize our impact on the marine environment. Here are some key tips to help us all preserve the natural wonders beneath our seas:

  • Practice buoyancy control: Avoid accidental contact with corals and marine life by mastering neutral buoyancy. Our blog Guide to Correctly Weighing Yourself for Neutral Buoyancy is an essential resource on this topic.
  • Respect marine life: Observe creatures (including coral formations) from a distance, and never touch or feed them.
  • Follow local guidelines: Stick to designated dive areas and adhere to instructions from your dive operator.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen: Protect both your skin and the coral reefs by choosing eco-friendly sun protection. Check out our blog What is Reef-Safe Sunscreen and What is its Importance? for more information about this product!
