The Sunset House Grand Cayman Story

The Sunset House tradition began in 1958 with Hebe Connors, a native 9th generation Caymanian, and her son Adrien Briggs. It was the first accommodation for divers travelling to Grand Cayman.

Miss Hebe added an eight-room guest house to her original cottage, accommodating a small number of visitors. Now, some 60 years later, Sunset House has grown to 36 air-conditioned units, including a choice of courtyard rooms, ocean view rooms, suites and apartments all nestled in lush greenery along the southwest shore of the island. Hebe Connors had an arrangement with Bob Soto, considered the father of recreational diving in the Cayman Islands, to take care of her diving guests. Bob worked on a Navy salvage tug in 1945 and brought this diving knowledge home to Cayman in the late 1950s. Miss Hebe asked Bob to teach her son Adrien to dive. When he was not in school, 12-year-old Adrien would accompany Bob on dive trips. According to Bob, Adrien ‘was a tough little dedicated diver’.

Adrien and his wife Bonnie started Sunset Divers in 1972, incorporating the dive shop into Sunset House. This was when Sunset House became Grand Cayman’s hotel for divers by divers.

One of the most famous attractions at Sunset House is the popular and casual My Bar. The resort’s outdoor tiki bar sits on the sea’s edge, overlooking the western horizon. It is the place to be during happy hour to watch the spectacular Cayman sunset. Sea Harvest restaurant is also on site, offering a mouthwatering choice of West Indian and East Indian cuisine.

The original name of My Bar was Mahogany Dropoff

Sunset House is also the home of Cathy Church’s Underwater Photo Centre. Cathy Church and her expert staff are on hand to offer photo courses and critiques, and the retail store has a full range of cameras, accessories, and souvenirs.

With Sunset Divers on site, divers are offered the best diving Grand Cayman has to offer, including custom dive boats (with two new ones on their way for next season), professional instructors, a full range of PADI courses, rinse tanks, and newly built dive lockers. Everything you would expect from your resort dive shop!

The shore dive on the house reef never disappoints with the famous Mermaid ‘Amphitrite’, a 9-foot tall bronze statue sitting at 55 feet, keeping an ever-present watch over the Sunset House reef. Venture a little further and you will find the wreck of the David Nicholson, a landing craft purposely sunk by Adrien as an artificial reef.
