Taste of Cayman, Food & Wine Festival at Camana Bay 2010

Friday, September 04, 2009, 12:11

The Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA) announces that January 2010 is officially Cayman's Culinary Month. The Taste of Cayman, Food and Wine Festival at Camana Bay is the pinnacle event for the month long culinary celebrations.

Now in its 22nd year, the Cayman Islands’ annual national food festival has continued to evolve and improve its representation of the restaurant industry and 2010 will be no different. This year CITA will be introducing more incentives for participating restaurants including bragging rights of being voted ‘Cayman’s Favourite Restaurant’ for the year! In 2008 the festival was modified to include an international wine tasting element. This was also the first year it was moved to the town centre at the stunning new development of Camana Bay, which has enabled it to blossom and grow both in size and execution. In celebration of these new additions this popular festival has been renamed Taste of Cayman, Food & Wine Festival at Camana Bay.

A host of events throughout the month will compliment the culinary celebration with the main event scheduled for January 16th 2010. The outdoor festival will serve up a variety of cuisines from up to 60 of Cayman's top culinary establishments, transforming Camana Bay town centre into one of the largest food festivals in the Caribbean with over 4000 people in attendance.

During this event the festival will showcase Cayman’s local restaurant talents by facilitating food tasting booths and allowing guests to literally have a "taste" of our local and International cuisine. Tasting will also include ’Wines On The Water‘ with over two-dozen vineyards represented at tasting booths along The Crescent. The family courtyard will feature activities for the entire family including skating demonstrations, tennis, games and art & crafts. And if you need to cool down, the Mojito Lounge features it own classic “chilled” setting or why not visit the VIP courtyard that will feature an upscale lounge with champagne reception! In addition to all this activity live music will spice things up and get you dancing while you enjoy the inviting backdrop of the beautiful waterfront setting.

As part of the 2010 culinary month celebrations in the Cayman Islands, CITA will be coordinating and endorsing other events which include; Cayman Cook-Out by The Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman, held from January 14-17th and the Barefoot Brunch held on January 10th as well as wine dinners at partner hotels and restaurants, in particular the Charity Wine Dinner which made its debut last year taking place on January 13th, the Flair Bar- tending Competition and many other interesting items such as cooking classes and demonstrations throughout the month. Proceeds from all events support the non-profit Cayman Islands Tourism Association and their partner charities, such as the Lighthouse School for disabled children. Tickets are available through the Cayman Islands Tourism Association and locations throughout the islands. Check out www.tasteofcayman.com.ky for more information or call 345-949-8522

MANTA RAY OFF SUNSET REEF

Thursday, August 20, 2009, 09:49

A group of shore divers this morning spotted a manta ray from the shore dive here at Sunset House.
The group was diving on the edge of the wall when they spotted the manta ray swimming effortlessly against the current. At a depth of 50 ft they followed it as best they could whilst capturing the ray on video. The video was then verified by Sunset Divers dive staff (you would be amazed how many people think the southern stingrays are mantas).

With any luck the ray will swing by for another visit!

Enriched Air Diver – is now available online.

Friday, August 14, 2009, 16:46

The most popular PADI Specialty course - This latest offering in the highly respected menu of PADI eLearning® course options allows divers to complete the knowledge development portion of the course on their own time and at their own pace. The PADI Enriched Air Diver Course Online incorporates changes to the recently revised PADI Enriched Air Diver program, including a dive-computer only option which simplifies the learning process...

How does the online course work?

The PADI Enriched Air Diver Course Online follows the same format used in other Sunset House eLearning courses.

- Divers complete all knowledge development online: This includes an active slide presentation with supporting voiceover, photos, diagrams and links to associated video clips. Divers will also have access to an online version of the PADI Enriched Air Diver manual after completing the course.
- As they proceed through the course, divers complete interactive exercises and the knowledge review. The PADI eLearning system provides assessment, feedback and remediation throughout the course, so student divers will always know how they’re doing.
- After completing all sections of the course, divers take the PADI Enriched Air Diver exam and get instant results. The PADI eLearning system scores the exam, provides remediation and – if needed -- administers a retest.
- Once divers finish the online course, they simply print the eLearning Record and bring it to their local PADI Dive Center or Resort where they’ll complete a quick review and the practical applications of the course -- including dive planning, gas analysis, fill procedures, etc. -- as well as the optional, but recommended, open water dives.

Scuba diving with enriched air nitrox delivers more no decompression dive time. This means more time underwater, especially on repetitive scuba dives. When diving using enriched air nitrox, divers can typically stay down longer and get back in to the water sooner. No wonder many divers choose this course as their very first specialty. To enroll in the new PADI Enriched Air Diver Course Online, divers should visit https://www.padi.com/elearning-scuba-registration/default.aspx?irra=261

Yes, WE are still Open! To Quench Any Rumors!

Thursday, July 23, 2009, 12:05

Hi all,

There is some sad news in the diving industry being released soon!

Sunset Waters in Curacao has closed its operation down effective immediately, we found out today.

We (Sunset House) and they (Sunset Waters) have always had a bit of mistaken identity for all those searching the internet as both have dive operators... “Sunset Divers”. We also use to kid each other that Sunset Waters stole our old "logo" when we redid our years ago. And, we won't say who had Sunset Divers first!

We at Sunset House in Grand Cayman are very sad to see any dive resort close its doors due to the climate of the economy. Sunset Waters in Curacao has provided quality dive vacations for a long time. We hate to see anyone in the dive industry close its doors!

Sunset House continues its strong reputation and is reminding everyone out there of their great fall special coming up this September and now extended to December 21st, 2009!

For more information on this special and the ongoing 50th anniversary, please go to www.sunsethouse.com/specials
We look forward to seeing you soon!

Warmest regards and safe diving,

Sunset House

Cathy Chuch's Photo Center Expands

Tuesday, July 07, 2009, 16:07

Cathy Church’s Photo Centre is expanding. The hotel gift shop off of our lobby is being enlarged to include the two adjacent rooms that are above Cathy’s present underwater photo centre which has been downstairs for over twenty years. Guests will enjoy an expanded line of sundries and things that travelers need, and now there will be an expanded camera store with excellent duty-free prices and a larger than ever selection of above water cameras and accessories. With more space they will offer more kiosks for easy and fast printing of your vacation photos at low prices and lots more interesting things such as magnets, jewelry, post cards and gallery photos.

Since we are a resort for divers, you will be happy to know that the world’s favorite underwater photo centre downstairs will now have more space once all of that above water stuff is moved upstairs. Divers will enjoy more space for their underwater photo classes and better access to all of the wonderful underwater cameras for rent and sale.
