About The CARIFTA Games

In 1972, Austin Sealy inaugurated the CARIFTA Games to mark the transition from the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). CARIFTA was meant to enhance relations between the English-speaking countries of the Caribbean after the dissolution of the West Indies Federation, but the CARIFTA Games took that idea a step further, including the French and Dutch Antilles in an annual junior track and field championship meet.

The meet which normally conducted over three days during the Easter period, consists of two age categories for boys and girls: under-17 and under-20, the latter in line with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) guidelines for junior athletes. The meet is run entirely under IAAF rules.

The Games have produced Olympians like, Usain Bolt of Jamaica, Darrel Brown of Trinidad, Kim Collins of St Kitts-Nevis, Pauline Davis-Thompson of the Bahamas, Alleyne Francique of Grenada and Obadele Thompson of Barbados and our very own, Kareem Streete-Thompson, Cydonie Mothersill and Ronald Forbes.

The Cayman Islands first competed in the CARIFTA Games in 1979 in Jamaica.

Sunset House and Cayman Islands Featured on Delta Airlines in October

Wednesday, September 30, 2009, 12:28

Grand Cayman’s Hotel for Divers by Divers Spearheads Scuba Diving Acquisition -

For passengers traveling on more than 17,000 domestic and international Delta Airlines flights, keep your eyes and ears out for Sunset House and the Cayman Islands in a travelogue-style video, promoting the sport of Scuba Diving and diving in the Cayman Islands.

Sunset House, Grand Cayman’s Hotel for Divers, by Divers along with the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, Divers Alert Network, the Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI), Sherwood Scuba and the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) contributed funds to develop a five-minute video segment for Delta Airlines In-flight Entertainment, directing potential new divers to DEMA’s Be a Diver website where potential customers can find every dive retailer in the United States, along with DEMA member international destinations to learn all facets of becoming a certified diver.

Launched in the spring of 2008, the Be a Diver campaign has contributed to the success of those who have embraced and utilized the unique branding materials of DEMA’s program. Much of the footage used in the Be a Diver commercial was actually filmed at Sunset House and the Cayman Islands with the goal of supporting global diver acquisition. The filming was conducted sensitively, to meet the need for depicting a generic, beautiful, warm water destination; all logos and identifiers were removed from boats revealing only a beautiful diving destination that would entice customers to the Be a Diver or retail user’s website. “Diver acquisition is key to the longevity of not only the sport, but tourism in the Cayman Islands” states Keith E. Sahm, Director of Marketing at Sunset House. “Sunset House has taken an active role in the promotion of the Be a Diver campaign. As everyone in the scuba industry should, we value new divers coming into our sport. As goes diving, as goes Sunset House and the Cayman Islands!”

Airing throughout the entire month of October, the 5 minute Delta Destinations video will showcase the Cayman Islands and the sport of scuba diving to more than 2.6 million travelers during the first hour of their flights.
